Winter 2024-2025 Trail Challenge Announced

Events & Brunches   |

How about any old warm clothes? The Winter Trail Challenge is back, and what better way to kick-start your personal health journey than with a self-guided trail challenge. Here is your reason to get out & stay motivated for some fresh air & tree therapy this winter.

We've Made it a Competition

Are you competitive by nature? Motivated by a simple reward and looking for an excuse to get outside? Then the Winter Trail Challenge is for you.

The Custer State Park Naturalist team has hand-selected some of its trails that make for a great cold-weather hike. Complete them all to earn your pin.

Four Months, Six Trails

And it's that easy. Just stop by the Custer State Park Visitor Center to pick up your trail list and get any final questions answered. From there, you're on your own.

Get a selfie from each of the listed trails at the marked sign for the rubbing (actual rubbing not required as it may be snow-covered) & show your selfies by April 4, 2025 to earn your pin.

Stay the Night

Hard work should be rewarded with a great night's rest. Show your rubbing form at check-in and your check-out time will be extended by 1 hour. Complimentary cold continental breakfast provided.

Rather stay in a cabin? We have a select number of cabins available for winter stays, too.

A note about preparedness

Custer State Park is located in the southern hills, which is known for much less snowfall. Many of the Winter Trail Challenge hikes take place at lower elevations. While colder weather is regularly expected, many times trails are easily done with standard hiking boots & gear. Watch the forecast & come prepared with layers.

Should conditions permit, complimentary snowshoes are available for check-out at the Visitor Center.
