Rapid City angler catches state-record tiger trout
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Friends of Mike Halter are calling him Tiger Mike after the Rapid City man reeled in a state-record tiger trout.
The 60-year-old Halter reeled in the whopper while ice fishing Monday at Center Lake in Custer State Park. The fish weighed more than 3.2 pounds, smashing the record of 1.2 pounds. That fish was caught by Tom Reeve of Piedmont in Center Lake in 2012.
State Game, Fish and Parks Naturalist Keith Wintersteen confirmed Halter's fish as a state record.
Tiger trout are rare. They're the offspring of a male brook trout and a female brown trout. Tigers are infertile and can't reproduce on their own.
Halter tells the Rapid City Journal he caught the record fish on a small jig with a worm and two kernels of corn.
