Locations
A short and scenic 45-minute drive to the southwest from Rapid City, enter the boundaries of Custer State Park's 71,000 acre wildlife preserve. At the eastern edge of the Park, just a few miles from Iron Mountain Road, discover the historic State Game Lodge.
Travel 10 minutes more to the west and stumble upon Legion Lake Lodge, but don't finish there. Follow Needles Highway up to Sylvan Lake, at elev. 6,145 feet and if the striking beauty doesn't leave you breathless and confused, Sylvan Lake Lodge is waiting on the other side of the hill.
Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway encircles all three of these picturesque lodges...leaving out only Blue Bell Lodge, which seems almost too content to instead be tucked along the western end of the Wildlife Loop Road.
