Custer State Park Resort Named to Top Resort List

The Historic State Game Lodge

Our four historic lodges made the list of the top Midwestern resorts from Midwest Living. Staying in the State Game Lodge, Midwest Living reporters described how the 1920s charm of the lodge and the beauty of the pine forest created a great experience that led to this rating:

Once a President's "summer white house," the State Park Game Lodge provides the comforts of home while visiting Custer State Park. Guests can stay in the main lodge or the adjacent stone-and-timber building that's set up motel style. The rooms include flat-screen televisions and granite bathroom counters but otherwise are dated. The building retains a 1920s game-lodge feel and features a massive, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the main lobby. The front desk is small, and still has an old-fashioned key-slot box on the wall behind the desk, keeping the charm of the 1920s era. A carpeted staircase wide enough to drive a car up leads to guest rooms upstairs. An art gallery and gift shop attaches to one side of the lobby, on the other, a separate bar and breakfast-nook-type spot leads to the newly remodeled restaurant. Breakfast, which includes a make-your-own Belgian waffle bar, hash browns, red potatoes, yogurt, fruit and cereal, biscuits, bacon, sausage and gravy is worth taking advantage of. For dinner, you might want to consider going elsewhere. As with most of the park's other lodgings, the Lodge gives you the chance to watch bison grazing on the front lawn and start beautiful hikes from the porch of the lodge itself.
